2008-09 Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA Gatorade® Championship Series
Chicago, IL – March 28, 2009 —The West Cook YMCA Youth Basketball League (YBL) boys’ team took 3rd place in the 2008-09 Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA Gatorade Championship Series, which took place on Saturday, March 28, 2009 at the University of Illinois-Chicago’s Physical Education department. The annual one-day Championship Series consists of 16-teams (eight boys & eight girls) of all skill levels. Player’s ages range between 11 and 13 years old.
The round-robin competition provided an excellent experience for the YBL team to showcase their skills against the areas top YMCAs, Boys Clubs, and Recreation Centers. The YBL boys team played a total of three games, winning two and losing one in route to a 3rd place finish. The girls squad claimed 4th, an encouraging result considering the team was a last minute entry in the competition, losing to the eventual girls team champion Proviso West Traveling Team. “I’m extremely happy with the way our teams competed in the tournament. It gave our kids a lot of confidence playing against some very strong teams from the Chicagoland Area,” West Cook YMCA YBL Coordinator Drew Richardson remarked.
The Gatorade Championship Series also featured an afternoon skills competition. The West Cook YMCA Youth Basketball League had five entries in the regional competition and each one of them placed. Ten year-old Dali Durazo of Oak Park punched his ticket to Orlando, FL for the Finals May 15 – 17, 2009 by taking 1st place in the region. Also placing were 13 year-old Jacob Edwards of Oak Park, 10 year-old Blair Ripley of Oak Park, 12 year-old Treviona Matthews of Oak Park and 12 year-old Patrick Coleman of Chicago.There are 6 images in this gallery

3rd Annual Cycle-A-Thon to beneift Invest in Youth
On Saturday, March 7, 2009 17 cyclists melded their love of riding with their passion for giving back to the YMCA by raising money for Invest in Youth.
Cyclists were encouraged to raise money by obtaining sponsors for each hour they rode, between 7:00am - 11:00am.
All enjoyed a fun instructor led ride, great music, exciting games and a GREAT workout!
Invest in Youth provides scholarship assistance to those in financial need.

Healthy Kids Day 2010
YMCA Healthy Kids Day was held in 3 locations on Saturday, April 17, 2010. These locations included Bellwood, Melrose Park and Oak Park. Hundreds of families participated in HKD, where they were able to learn helpful ways in which to stay healthy and active throughout their lives.

Kosovo Children's Book Drive
During August 2009, the West Cook YMCA collected children's books from members and guests to send to less fortunate kids in Kosovo. As a result, over 100 books were donated!!

Spring Classic 2009 Racquetball Tournament
Five players participated in this annual round robin style tournament. Each player played 2 games against their opponent for a total of 8 games. Buddy Bradford came in first place with a 7-1 record followed by Andrew Shack with a 5-3 record.

Thanksgiving Day Dinner at the YMCA 2009
The West Cook YMCA hosted it's annual Thanksgiving Day Dinner for it's residents and guests of West Suburban P.A.D.S. (Public Action to Deliver Shelter) on November 26, 2009. Over 50 guests enjoyed a Thanksgiving Day meal provided through the volunteer efforts of YMCA staff and members, community residents and P.A.D.S. volunteers and staff.
Also providing food for the event was Jewel-Osco on Madison St., in Oak Park, Complete Vending Service, Papaspiros Restaurant, and Whole Foods of River Forest.

West Cook YMCA Spring Gala 2010
The 2010 YMCA Spring Gala was held at the Oak Park Country Club on Thursday, April 22, 2010. Every year the YMCA holds it's annual gala as a fundraiser for our Invest In Youth Scholarship program as well as a platform to celebrate the previous year's accomplishments.

1st Annual West Cook YMCA Prayer Breakfast
Moods were bright during a cloudy morning on November 11th as a diverse group of nearly 40 individuals attended the 1st Annual West Cook YMCA Prayer Breakfast. The breakfast, held during the World Week of Prayer, was highlighted by a speech from Sam Evans of the McCormick Theological Seminary. Donations collected during the event were used to benefit YMCA World Service.
