Job Description

Position Summary:

Under the supervision of the Aquatic Coordinator and the overall direction of the Aquatic Director, the lifeguard is responsible for the safety and well-being of all patrons. Maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas.  Creates a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with the West Cook YMCA policies and procedures.

Essential Functions:
  1. Responsible for the safety of all individuals by maintaining active surveillance of the pool area during various activities and programs.
  2. Responds immediately to emergency situations accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Adheres to all guidelines and procedures set in the West Cook YMCA Handbook and Aquatic Manual.
  3. Maintains effective, positive relationships with the members, participants and other staff.
  4. Maintains all certifications required for the position and all other certifications required by Aquatic Director when needed.
  5. Performs equipment checks, chemical testing, and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
  6. All other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Qualifications:
  1. Minimum age of 16.
  2. Certifications: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid and Emergency Oxygen or ability to obtain prior to starting
  3. Current YMCA Lifeguard certification or equivalent.
Physical Demands:
  1. Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility. Remain alert with no lapses of consciousness.
  2. Must be able to lift and carry supplies weighing up to 50 pounds.
  3. See and observe all sections of an assigned zone or area of responsibility.
  4. Ability to stand or sit while maintaining alertness for several hours at a time.
  5. Position may require bending, leaning, kneeling, and walking.
Working Conditions:
  1. Able to walk, stand, and sit alertly for extended periods of time.
  2. Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  3. Position may require bending, leaning, kneeling, and walking.
  4. Exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids.
  5. Exposure to humidity/warm temperature.
