Job Description

Position Summary:

Under the supervision of the Aquatic Coordinator and the overall direction of the Aquatic Director, the Swim Instructor provides direct leadership, instruction safety, and motivation for students in swimming classes in accordance to the designated West Cook YMCA Swim Lesson Program.

Essential Functions:

  1. Effectively design and plan YMCA Swim Lesson for all levels as outlined by the standards of the YMCA
  2. Teach and develop positive relationships to diverse populations and have the ability to adjust swim lessons accordingly.
  3. Maintain records as required such as progress reports, session plans, rosters, etc.
  4. Obtain and maintain YMCA Swim Lesson certifications and all other certification required by Aquatic Director when needed.
  5. Responds to emergencies according to YMCA protocols
  6. Adhere to all guidelines and procedures set to by the West Cook YMCA Handbook and Aquatic Manual
  7. All other duties as assigned by supervisor

  1. Minimum age of 16
  2. Previous teaching experience or approximately 1 month of training under West Cook YMCA
  3. Must complete and pass a prerequisite test administered by the West Cook YMCA demonstrating your ability to plan and organize a swim lesson
  4. Certifications: Current or ability to obtain in 90 days American Red Cross or American Heart Association CPR for Professional Rescuer, AED, and First Aid or equivalent
Physical Demands
  1. Ability to instruct and observe participants in proper stroke technique
  2. Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility. Remain alert with no lapses of consciousness.
  3. Must be able to lift and carry supplies weighing up to 50 pounds.
  4. See and observe all sections of an assigned zone or area of responsibility.
  5. Ability to stand or sit while maintaining alertness for several hours at a time.
  6. Position may require bending, leaning, kneeling, and walking.
Working Conditions
  1. Able to walk, stand, and sit alertly for extended periods of time.
  2. Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  3. Position may require bending, leaning, kneeling, and walking.
  4. Exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids.
  5. Exposure to humidity/warm temperature.
