Job Description


West Cook YMCA Cycle Instructors provide instruction for group cycling classes and may assist with other Healthy Living programming and special events. Cycle Instructors offer participants planned programs to advance their workout efficiency, improve their fitness level, and most importantly, make strides towards achieving a greater sense of health and well-being.

  1. Model the YMCA’s commitment to improving health and well-being.
  2. Lead onsite group cycling classes in a safe and effective manner and provide a high level of service to members and participants.
  3. Allow adequate time pre/post to engage with participants in order to help build a greater sense of community and provide opportunities for health literacy.
  4. Respond immediately to emergency situations in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Adhere to all guidelines and procedures set forth in the West Cook YMCA Handbook.
  5. Assist the Healthy Living Department in finding substitutes when unable to attend a scheduled class.
  6. Know and enforce all YMCA rules and regulations.
  7. Keep the Cycle Studio area and equipment organized, clean, and inviting.
  8. Ensure that all certifications are current and up-to-date.
  9. Perform other duties as assigned by the Healthy Living Fitness Program Coordinator.

  1. Cycle certification from one of the following certifying bodies: Spin®, ICI/PRO, Schwinn®, AFAA G.E.A.R., NETA, ACE, or another reputable national organization.
  2. Group exercise certification from one of the following certifying bodies: AFAA, ACSM, ACE, YMCA, ADAA, NSCA, or another reputable national organization.
  3. Certification or willingness to receive certification within 60 days of hire in CPR/AED, First Aid, and Bloodborne Pathogens through the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross.
  4. Ability and willingness to respond to critical situations and act swiftly in an emergency.
  5. Certification or willingness to receive certification in Child Abuse Prevention.
  6. Understanding of the ACSM/ACE safety guidelines of contraindications.
  7. Professional and friendly customer service skills and clear verbal communication skills.
  8. Willingness and ability to work early mornings, evenings, and weekends.
  • Walking, standing, and sitting (including on the floor) for long periods of time and while maintaining alertness.
  • Exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids.
  • Lifting and carrying supplies weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Frequent bending, leaning, and kneeling.
