Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Youth Development Director is responsible for the planning, organization, delivery and quality of all Youth Development programs.  Programs include but are not limited to Early Childhood Education, School Age Child Care, Summer Day Camp, Babysitting, Family and Teen programs. The focus of this role is on innovative and quality programs, collaborations with community partners, expansion of programs within our service area, create opportunities/new programs, increase in enrollment in existing programs, and fiscal accountability. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  1. Ensure your department’s financial benchmarks +/- 3% of budget to actual by, effectively managing day to day operations, driving revenue, and monitoring departmental expenses
  2. Enable proactive, clear, effective and timely internal communications in order to ensure a positive and consistent member experience.
  3. Identify, collect and interpret data so that it enables informed decision making and ensures the achievement of key performance indicators.
  4. Recruit, hire, train, develop, schedule and direct personnel and volunteers as needed. Review and evaluate staff performance. Develop strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals.
  5. Establish new programs and expand programming to additional locations within the community in accordance with strategic and operational plan.
  6. Monitors program registration goals to understand trends and identify means for development. Adapts and customizes program portfolio to meet community needs. Optimizes program capacity and enrollment goals
  7. Assist in the marketing and distribution of program information. Plans community engagement strategy. This includes collaborating with peers and leaders in and outside the Y.
  8. Assure compliance with state, local, DCFS and American Camp Association accreditation standards. Ensure that YMCA best practice program standards are met and safety procedures followed.
  9. Develop and maintain relationships with participant families, state child care & day camp licensing agencies, school administration, parent groups and other organizations/agencies related to assigned programs.
  10. Collaborate with other Y Leadership on YMCA committees and projects, such as: Grants Committee, Risk Management, Praesidium accreditation, Annual Support Campaign, and other projects as assigned.
  11. Act as the Y advocate for Youth in all areas including youth development, safety, child abuse prevention, etc. Teach Child Abuse Prevention Training, and other required trainings, annually and assist with training new staff during the onboarding process.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent or higher in Elementary Education, Early Childhood Education or a related field with a minimum of 21 college semester hours in courses related to Early Childhood Education or Childhood Development.
  2. Type 03 or 04 IL Teacher Certification preferred
  3. ExceleRate IL Director Credential level 1 or higher preferred; must be obtained once in role
  4. Three years related experience with programs serving youth 0-14 years of age. YMCA experience preferred.
  5. Strategic thinking skills including effective planning, setting goals, monitoring progress, tracking results and making appropriate adjustments to plans based on circumstances and context
  6. Ability to organize and prioritize multiple, competing priorities to maximize personal and team effectiveness
Working Conditions
 
  1. Sufficient strength, agility and mobility to perform essential functions and to supervise program activities in a wide variety of indoor and outdoor locations (depending upon the programs).
  2. Ability to work in excess of a 40-hour week with irregular work hours.
  3. Ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the floor) for long periods of time.
  4. Exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids.
  5. Must be able to lift and/or assist children up to 50 pounds in weight.
  6. Must be able to lift and carry supplies weighing up to 20 pounds.
  7. Position may require bending, leaning, kneeling, and walking.
  8. Ability to speak concisely and effectively communicate.
  9. Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency
  10. Ability to view/enter data for long periods of time.
