Beginning in 2012, the Pleasant District in Oak Park teamed up with the West Cook YMCA, Greenline Wheels, and The Competitive Foot to put on the first ever Pleasant District Family Triathlon. This incredibly unique event provided families in the Oak Park area the opportunity to participate in a low-stress, family friendly triathlon- the only one of its kind in the area, and maybe even the country!
The PDFT is a unique race format in that an adult and child participate together as a team, side-by-side in the pool, on their bikes, and on the run. One team = 1 child ages 7-15 + one adult age 16 and older. These adults can be parents, grandparents, siblings, babysitters, coaches, etc! Prizes are awarded to the top girl, boy, and adult in each age group.
7-10 Age Group (plus adults)
100yd swim (4 lengths)
4.2k bike (3 laps)
1k run (1 lap)
11-15 Age Group (plus adults)
200yd swim (8 lengths)

NEW IN 2014! Peekaboo Playroom will be offering limited childcare during the race for younger siblings of race participants. Childcare will be for children at least 2 years old and potty trained. Limited space will be available, and advance registration is required. Spaces will be filled first come, first served. All parents will need to fill out a waiver when they drop off their child(ren) on race day. If you would like to use this service, please contact Sarah Gulseth at 708-434-0226 or firstname.lastname@example.org to receive registration information.
The swim portion of the race is hosted by the West Cook YMCA in their 25yd pool. The bike portion is on a controlled access course on the streets surrounding the Pleasant District (Randolph, Maple, South Blvd., and Home). The run portion is on Marion St. The transition area is hosted by the West Cook YMCA in their parking lot.
Teams will use their own bicycles for the bike portion of the race. If any adult or child is in need of a bicycle, Greenline Wheels has adult and youth bikes for rent. Contact David Poppei at 708-725-7170 or email@example.com.
For the second year, the race will be chip timed by Championchip 24/7. Chip timing provides a "Real Race" feel for kids and allows us to expand to larger audiences in the future.
Greenline Wheels provides the hub for race day check-in and the logistical headquarters for the race director and all volunteers. The West Cook YMCA is the financial agent in the partnership and handles all registrations and vendor agreements. Greenline Wheels provides race packet support. Volunteers provide all race support, including course supervision, transition area security, and cheering for all participants during the race.
"Hands down, best kids race of the year. The unique team format allows the kids to race next to their parents and gives it a more relaxed atmosphere. I wouldn't be surprised to see this format become more and more popular. And kudos to West Cook YMCA for giving it a warm touch with their attention to detail and great communication."
Ruben Figueres has competed in more than 200 triathlons in several countries, having represented Spain and the USA in 5 different world championships, including IM Hawaii.
"Wonderful group of people who organized, trained, and ran the event!"
"Very positive experience overall. Friendly course volunteers who called out names - very nice and supportive touch!"
"The volunteer support and enthusiasm was tremendous."
"Excellent. It was a great experience!"
"I like the friendly, low-key nature of this race."
"We love this event!!"
