YMCAs in more than 120 countries work every day—often in challenging social, economic and political environments—to give people the tools and resources to create a better future for themselves and their families. Each year, YMCA of the USA's World Service Campaign raises and distributes funds to help Ys become stronger and better able to respond to the critical social issues that are keeping people from reaching their potential.
In many communities around the world, the YMCA is the only place where a kid can access a library, a teen can learn about HIV/AIDS prevention or a family can break the cycle of poverty because of a Y job training program. Universally, YMCAs know the issues impacting their community because they are an integral part of the community. Ys have the understanding, expertise and local connections to develop the innovative, impactful programs and services, which move people and communities forward. World Service partners with Ys around the globe to make sure that they have the resources to deliver these life-changing programs to the people who need them the most.
Each Summer, the West Cook YMCA Summer Camp leads our Y community in collecting change for World Service. Campers are encouraged to bring in spare change to add to their camp group’s collection. During the camp day, we will be learning about the country their group has chosen to represent at this summer’s World Service Carnival. We will learn about that nation’s culture, traditions, crafts, food, games, and more. Each camp group will present their country at our annual World Service Carnival. At the carnival, campers, families, and Y members will have an opportunity to purchase items the campers have made to represent their country. Items will range from 5¢ to $1, and all proceeds will be donated to the Y’s World Service Campaign. We encourage you to check the Events Page for this fun and exciting event and plan to attend!
