Today, older adults are more health conscious than ever before. We offer seniors the opportunity to maintain a healthy lifestyle and healthy relationships through exercise programs, both in and out of the water, and volunteer opportunities. Our active adult exercise classes promote fitness and well-being while fostering friendships and camaraderie.
This 17-week drawing program for participants 62 years and older explores a variety of drawing techniques and materials. Students will develop the skills and confidence it takes to create their own works of art. Participants will work individually and as a group, exchanging ideas and discussing outcomes at the completion of each project. Attendees will have the experience of exhibiting their artwork at the end of the course. Prior experience is not required, and beginners are highly encouraged to sign up.
About the Instructor: Dolores Mercado (b. Jalisco, Mexico) studied art at The School of Visual Arts of the University of Guadalajara, the National Institute of Fine Arts “La Esmeralda” in Mexico City, and has also taken courses at “The San Carlos Academy” from the National Autonomous University (UNAM) in Mexico City, and The School of Video of the University of Guadalajara. For the past twenty-two years, she has taught art in different mediums for children, teenagers and adults. She has exhibited in Mexico, Spain, the United States, Nicaragua and Canada. Her work is part of several museums’ collections in The United States and Mexico.
Class Dates: March 3, 2019-June 30, 2019 on Sundays from 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm
Cost: $200 or four monthly drafts of $50; includes all art supplies

Every Friday at the Y is Free Senior Friday! Any senior age 62+ can access the West Cook YMCA facility and any Complimentary (free) classes. Seniors must pay a drop-in fee for Specialty (pay) classes. Access to the facility includes the Spas/Locker Rooms, Wellness Center (including cardio and weight equipment), gyms, Community Learning Center, and the pool - including Senior Swim. Come by and see how the Y can serve you!
Senior Swim is held every Friday late morning to accommodate all seniors on Free Senior Friday. Please check the current pool schedule on our website or at the Member Engagement Desk to see the most current time slot!
An exercise program especially for active older adults. Must be able to stand on both feet. Begin with a great cardio workout, followed by strengthening using bands, light weights, balls and more. End with mat work for a complete workout.
Have fun and move to the music through a variety of exercises designed to increase muscular strength, range of movement and activities of daily living. Hand-held weights, exercise balls and elastic tubing with handles are offered for resistance. A chair is available if needed for seated or standing support.
Relieve stress, increase flexibility, balance and range of motion. Work through seated and standing poses. Chair support offered. Restorative breathing and relaxation exercises stressed.
