My aquatics experience started when I was in third grade. I joined a competitive swim team and competed for eight years. I also became a lifeguard the summer of my freshman year of high school. Swimming has been a huge part of my life, so naturally I wanted to become a swim instructor. I first started teaching in 2010. I instantly fell in love with being an instructor. I’ve taught all ages from toddlers to adults. I continue to teach now because of my passion for swimming, but I also teach now to engage with the community I work for. I am grateful to teach something I am passionate about and have fun while I am teaching it.

I have been a certified athletic trainer for 11 years and teaching classes at the YMCA for 1.5 years. I moved to the area 9 years ago. I was looking for a gym where the focus was on community. The Y fit the bill perfectly. I enjoy all of the people at the Y, from the front desk staff to the class members to the residents. I have enjoyed having the Y as a part of my daily routine. I started at the Y as a member and quickly felt at home. I was challenged by the classes and made many fitness friends who were pushing me to reach new fitness goals. As I got more ingrained in the WCY, I decided I wanted to contribute to others success! So I started teaching group ex classes and have loved taking my class participants on their fitness journeys.

Jiwon is a professional violinist and educator who strongly believes in the healing power of yoga. She was first brought to the mat at the age of 18 when she was going through extreme physical and mental exhaustion from years of practicing and performing on the violin. Since then, finding time for yoga practice and spiritual growth has become the most important part of her life. Her belief in the power of yoga inspired her and in 2013, she began teaching Vinyasa yoga in South Korea and continued to share this passion across the United States. She joined the YMCA family to bring yoga to every individual, regardless of ability, age, cultural background, ethnicity, faith, gender, gender identity, ideology, income, national origin, race or sexual orientation. It is Jiwon’s goal at the West Cook YMCA to serve a community where every individual feels included and nurtured through the practice of yoga.
