Job Description

OVERVIEW

The Lead Teacher promotes and supports the potential of all youth and is committed to a child centered approach to youth development with a focus on instilling character development values ensures opportunities for building new skills.

 
POSITION SUMMARY

The Lead Teacher co-creates and ensures a welcoming environment where young scholars feel safe to be themselves, are engaged in activities that build skills and gain a sense of achievement, while developing positive relationships. A successful candidate will be committed to a child centered approach to youth development with a focus on instilling character development values. In addition, will develop and implement enrichment opportunities for scholars to support growth in academic, physical, and social emotional development.

The Lead Teacher is responsible for assisting in the planning, development, and implementation of all nine program components and program activities. Promotes and supports the potential of all youth, ensures opportunities for building new skills, and creates opportunities for open exchange of ideas. To ensure full implementation of program components and program goals the Lead Teacher is expected to participate in ongoing professional development and planning sessions on a scheduled basis.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  1. The Lead Teacher will use best practices, guidelines, and methods of youth development in daily work and provides careful, attentive supervision, and promotes leaning and safety.
  2. Recognizes that all youth have individual needs, temperaments, characteristics, and abilities and develop at their own pace; in order to develop and implement appropriate enrichment and program experiences to meet scholars where they are and ensured the students is thriving.
  3. Plans and use the S.A.F.E. framework to facilitate purposeful and engaging activities and group projects that compliments the program’s thematic or project-based agenda according to the program nine components and site implementation plan.
  4. In partnership with the Site Manager, creates and implements lesson and implementation plans in a developmentally appropriate manner, meeting the individual physical, social emotional and academic needs of their classroom participants.
  5. Leads enrichment and program activities and engages youth in leadership and character development opportunities.
  6. Preparing classrooms for daily activities and collaborating with program staff to ensure that objectives are reached, and the classroom is organized and effective.
  7. Facilitates a program environment that invites exploration, promotes positive play, and welcomes children.
  8. Maintain accurate classroom records as assigned and according to program requirements.
  9. Communicates regularly with parents; attends parent/family events as designated by supervisor.
  10. Demonstrates a working knowledge of YMCA mission, purpose and goals, childcare policies and YMCA standards; ensures the program meets the highest standards of excellence.

  • $25 per hour
HOURS
  • Afterschool Program Typical shift 2:30 pm to 6:30 pm, plus additional hours as needed for Out of School Time programs

REQUIRED SKILLS AND REQUISITES
  1. Bachelor’s degree is required, education or youth development field preferred.
  2. A minimum of two years prior experience working with children between the ages of 5 and 13 years of age required.
  3. Experienced in implementing program activities and tasks.
  4. Exceptional group management, problem-solving and conflict resolution skills.
  5. Experience in creating interactive and educational/artistic activities, youth development, academic enrichment and arts.
  6. Flexibility, with the ability to adapt to changing circumstances.
  7. Outstanding verbal, written, and technological (computer/Internet) skills
  8. Ability to build relationships and influence students.
  9. Excellent organizational and communication skills appropriate for interacting with both children and adults.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  1. Ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the floor) for long periods of time
  2. Exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids
  3. Ability to stand or sit while maintaining alertness for several hours at a time
  4. Position may require bending, leaning, kneeling, and walking
  5. Must be able to lift and carry supplies weighing up to 50 lbs.
  6. Ability to speak concisely and effectively communicate
  7. Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency
