West Cook YMCA

December 2015 CEO Message

Published 12.01.15

Thanks to our sponsors, supporters and guests a most successful Gala drew a substantial crowd to the Oak Park Country Club and raised a record $ 77,000 for our Annual Support Campaign to provide Y program scholarships for qualified persons and families in need. A highlight of the evening was the “auction” of seven special initiatives for scholarships to the Y’s pre-school, residence, wellness and health literacy, after-school, chronic disease prevention, youth basketball and swim lesson programs. The Gala’s proceeds, together with other funds raised throughout the year, such as the 43rd annual Christmas Tree Sale now underway until December 24 in our north parking lot, will permit financially challenged persons who qualify for scholarships to enjoy all the health and fitness benefits of the West Cook YMCA. Visit our Christmas Tree Sale page here for more details.

The YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program, a year-long evidence based initiative that focuses on improving lifestyle habits and behavioral choices in an attempt to prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes, begins at the Y this month. We are the only YMCA in northern Illinois to be selected to conduct this program. It’s estimated that over 86 million American adults have prediabetes, a condition in which a person’s blood glucose is higher than normal, but not high enough to be classified as diabetes. The first year-long session at the West Cook YMCA begins December 8 and will be facilitated by certified Lifestyle coaches. There are places open for qualified adults, 18 years or older who have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 25 or more and who are at risk for or who have been diagnosed with prediabetes. Other sessions will be scheduled as needed. To learn more, please contact Laura Olszewski, Healthy Living Director, at 708-434-0235 or visit our Diabetes Prevention Program page here.

I invite you to consider a year-end gift to the West Cook YMCA, for it’s a wonderful way to ensure that others may benefit from the same Y membership advantages that you enjoy. As a not-for-profit organization, because our membership fees pay for the administration and day-to-day operations of the Y, 100 percent of all contributions made to the Annual Support Campaign are directed to scholarships for persons in the communities we serve who are unable to afford full membership rates. We invite any qualified resident of our service area to apply. Scholarship amounts vary by need and are awarded on a first-come-first served basis, depending on the availability of funds. All records are kept confidential, and forms may be accessed here.

As we close out what has been a splendid and successful year at the West Cook YMCA, on behalf of our board and staff, I wish you the peace and joy of the season’s holidays. May you enjoy the light, friendship and warmth of the season and have a safe and happy Christmas and Holiday season and a very healthy New Year.
