May 2018 CEO Message

CEO Message for May - It's Your Y and We're Listening!

Published 05.01.18
Dear Member,
We've recently received the results of our latest SEER Member Survey, and we're so appreciative of every member who took the time to respond. We take the SEER survey input very seriously. In fact, many of the changes you've seen in the last 24 months have been a direct result of what you told us through past SEER surveys.
So what did you tell us this year?
First, you recognized improvement in three areas:
  • Our programs are doing a better job helping you achieve your goals. That's great! Keep up your hard work - and thank you for letting us take the journey to wellness with you.
  • You're feeling a greater sense of belonging and building stronger relationships with other Y members. We are so glad that our revamped classes are leading to more meaningful connections. Staying focused on healthy living isn't always easy, but having others who support and encourage you can really help.
  • Our facilities are more welcoming. I'm pleased you are seeing the improvements because we take this area very seriously. Our internal housekeeping team is committed to working hard to make sure every piece of equipment and public areas are always ready for you, and the deep cleaning crews we've contracted with are held to incredibly high standards because giving you a great facility matters.
Secondly, you told us where we need to focus this year's improvement plans:
  • We need to be better communicators, both listening and giving you useful information. We're not yet ready to announce how we're addressing this, but we're busy tearing into our current methods of communicating and looking for ways to make them better. We have more tools for communication than ever before, and we want to be sure we're using each method most effectively. So be watching for some announcements on our plans to make this an area that you love! And further down below, we have important messages for our members in an attempt to be better communicators.
  • You asked us to enhance our Youth Development area. This is a major focus for the Y and it's one we're constantly looking at. Although our After-School program is less visible as we now operate it at an offsite location, I'm thrilled to report that we've grown the participation of youth in this program by 30%. We offer what are probably the best hours for working parents of any after-school program in the area (7 am to 7 pm) and have emphasized enhanced qualifications and ongoing training for our staff. We're looking to offer even more sessions of "Healthy Weight and Your Child," and this summer, we'll launch the Power Scholars Academy, a summer learning loss prevention program in partnership with school districts 90 and 91. Our revamped swim lessons are focused on achieving goals, and our swimmers are having a great time learning to swim. Have we "arrived" yet? No - but we hear you and we're looking at more ways to continue to nurture potential in every child through age-appropriate programs and ... well, just plain fun!
  • It's important to you that we keep strengthening the community outside our West Cook YMCA walls. We're continuing to enter into partnerships that will benefit our members and the community at large through programs like the OPRF Chamber of Commerce Health Fair that was hosted on April 29. We're looking at other opportunities to take our healthy living classes to local medical centers, similar to how "Healthy Weight and Your Child" is offered at Gottlieb Memorial Hospital. There's more for us to do in this area as you reminded us - and we're taking your advice to heart. So watch for more information about the partnerships that you are part of because you are a member of the Y.
I honestly can't thank you enough for taking the time to tell us what we're doing right and where we need to work harder. We hold ourselves to a very high standard - YOURS! We're listening and we'll keep making changes because the West Cook Y is all about our members.
Thank you for making this your Y and for letting us partner with you to better health and wellness.
