RECREATIONAL AQUATIC PROGRAMS

All of the intentional steps taken to curate our aquatics programming are done with you in mind. With the combination of programs, we have had in the past, we are excited to announce the programs we are rolling out in 2022. We have the intention of engaging our aquatics community with opportunities tailored to our members interests and needs. These opportunities include leadership roles, recreational sports and games, aquatic conditioning, and diving skills. These new programs are the next step after swim lessons in the Aquatic Pathway to give young swimmers a lifetime of a healthy, respectful, safe, loving and most importantly fun relationships with water.

RECREATIONAL AQUATIC PATHWAY PROGRAMS

AQUATIC CONDITIONING

Focuses on continuing to build endurance and stroke technique on all major competitive strokes and encourages swimming as part of a healthy lifestyle. This would be great for a swimming considering trying out for Swim Team, to support the transition from swim lesson style of swimming to how a competitive swim team practice will be. This program is also great for competitive swimmers that may want to focus on specific stroke development. In 2022 will be for ages 11 through 16, depending on swim ability.

ENDURANCE, SPORTS, AND GAMES

This program will continue to build endurance on all major competitive strokes and encourages aquatic sports and games as part of a healthy lifestyle. If your child is looking for a fun exciting option after competing swim lessons, this would be a great option! There will be two program offerings in 2022, for ages 5 to 10 and 11 to 16, depending on swim ability.

INTRODUCTION TO DIVING

Focuses on teaching the foundational skills for beginning diving participant with both dry-land conditioning and pool time. Recommended age ranges 5-12 years and 12 to 18 years. 

AQUATIC YOUTH LEADERSHIP FOR SWIM INSTRUCTOR DEVELOPMENT

Encourages leadership development in the area of aquatic instruction with the goal to prepare and motivate participants to become swim lesson instructors through a separate certification course. School-aged youth and teens ages 11 to 16.

AQUATIC YOUTH LEADERSHIP FOR LIFEGUARD DEVELOPMENT

Encourages leadership development in the area of aquatic safety with a goal to prepare and motivate participants to become lifeguards through a separate certification course. School-aged youth and teens ages 11 to 16.


KAYAKING

INTRO TO KAYAKING

This fun, six-week class for ages 13+ provides the skills and knowledge to enable you to safely paddle on moving water. It covers basic strokes, braces, rolls and other boat-handling skills along with river reading and rescue techniques. Upon successful completion of this course, participants are qualified to join the Chicago Whitewater Association on its beginner river trips in the Spring. All equipment for this class is provided, though you can bring your own boat as long as is is less than 10 feet long. Club membership costs $15 per year and is required. Club registration must be done before the first day of class at https://cwa.wildapricot.org/join-us  Please note: We provide short whitewater boats for this course. Longer boats do not fit in the pool.

KAYAKING OPEN POOL

Are you working on your roll? Or do you just need some time in a warm pool with a paddle in your hands? Join us for three Sunday evenings, when you can work independently or get some tips and feedback from Alec and Sharon Bloyd-Peshkin of Have Kayaks, Will Travel. Some equipment is available (boats, paddles and skirts), though sizes are limited. You can bring your own, but only smaller boats (under 10 feet) can fit through the door. Prior paddling experience is strongly recommended. Please note: We provide short whitewater boats for this course. Longer boats do not fit in the pool.

Date: Sundays, April 3, 10 and 24 (no class April 17)

WATER FITNESS

Experience the benefits of water resistance to improve cardiovascular ability, strength, balance and flexibility.  Water fitness classes are for individuals of every age, held in both shallow and deep water. All classes are led by our YMCA-certified water fitness instructors. Participants do not need to know how to swim but should be comfortable in the water.  

DEEP WATER EXERCISE

This is a moderate to high intensity workout that takes place in deep depths of water in the pool. Participants can increase their range of motion using non impact movements for an overall cardio and strength workout. A flotation device is provided.

SHALLOW WATER FITNESS

This is a low to moderate intensity low-impact total body workout that takes place in the shallow end of the pool. Participants do not need to know how to swim.

Minimum of four participants are needed to run the class and they will be cancelled 24 hours in advance and an email will be sent to participants if the minimum is not reached.
