JOB DESCRIPTION

POSITION SUMMARY:

The West Cook YMCA has made a commitment to providing premiere fitness programming that enhances individuals’ health and well-being while also fostering connections and building community. The Fitness Expert in coordination with the Healthy Living Director will support the coordination and implementation of all Fitness programming as well as lead efforts for generating engagement and revenue through ensuring enrollment and sales of Personal Training, Yoga, Water Fitness, Workplace Wellness and other Healthy Living Department programming.

The person in this role will drive enrollment and offer fitness consultations, wellness center orientations, will be the primary substitute for group fitness classes onsite and offsite, conduct one-on-one and small group personal training (PT) sessions, and assist with other Healthy Living programming and special events. Fitness Experts play a crucial role in helping participants to advance their workout efficiency, improve their fitness level, and most importantly, make strides towards achieving a greater sense of health and well-being. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  1. Support HL director in all aspects of the Fitness Program, including but not limited to enrollment, staffing, scheduling, and interdepartmental coordination to ensure an optimal member experience.
  2. Allocation of time will include administration hours to support driving enrollment, implementing quality programming, conducting fitness consultations and wellness orientations, conduct a minimum of 8-10 PT sessions, and being the primary substitute for all group fitness classes as needed.
  3. Responsible finding substitutes or filling in when an instructor is unable to attend a scheduled group fitness class or PT session.
  4. Perform fitness consultations and Wellness Center orientations to help members achieve their health and wellness goals.
  5. Monitor daily operations to ensure the fitness staff are adhering to all YMCA health and safety standards and policies.
  6. Compile program statistics and monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of all fitness programs.
  7. Attend and contribute to all mandatory staff meetings, workshops, and in-services.
  8. Responsible for the Visual and Audio Equipment to ensure quality member experience
  9. Respond immediately to emergency situations in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Adhere to all guidelines and procedures set forth in the West Cook YMCA Handbook.
  10. Perform other duties as assigned by the Healthy Living Director.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND REQUISITES:
  1. Bachelor’s degree in Recreation Management, Exercise Science, or a related field.
  2. Current group exercise certification through one of the following certifying bodies: AFAA, ACSM, ACE, YMCA, ADAA, NSCA, or another reputable national organization.
  3. Preferred current personal training certification through one of the following certifying bodies: ACE, NASM, ACSM, AFAA, NSCA, or another reputable national organization.
  4. Knowledge of exercise physiology, kinesiology, safe training procedures, exercise program implementation, contraindications, and proper cardiovascular, resistance, free weight, and related fitness equipment.
  5. Willingness and available to work early morning, evening, and weekends
  6. Must have more than 2 years direct experience
  7. Poses strong interpersonal, public relations and communications skills.
  8. Proven ability to relate effectively with diverse groups of community members from all social and economic segments, all age groups and levels of ability.
  9. Certification or willingness to receive certification in Child Abuse Prevention 
WORKING CONDITIONS:
  1. Must be energetic and able to handle the physical demands of the job.
  2. Trainers must be physically able to demonstrate any and all recommended exercises and routines.
  3. Standing, walking, talking, bending, leaning, kneeling, and active listening are other demands of the position.
  4. Able to lift and carry supplies weighing up to 50 pounds throughout the course of a workday
  5. Exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids
  6. Ability to speak concisely and effectively communicate
  7. Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency
